President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to kick off a nationwide poverty alleviation program in Palu, Central Sulawesi, on May 1.

During the launch of the National People's Empowerment Program (PNPM), in Baiya subdistrict, North Palu district, Yudhoyono will meet and speak with poor residents who are aid recipients of the Urban Poor Eradication Program.

Coordinating Minister for the People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie visited the venue for the launch ceremony during a recent three-day visit to Palu.

The PNPM is a labor-intensive basic infrastructure development program. Funded by Rp 51 trillion (US$5.6 billion) from the 2007 state budget, the program will be introduced in about 50,000 locations across the country.

Also in Palu, President Yudhoyono is scheduled to open the National Conflict Resolution symposium, organized by the Indonesian National Youth Committee.

Yudhoyono and his entourage will travel to Parigi Moutong regency the following day to take part in a harvest, before continuing on to Poso.

Central Sulawesi provincial secretary Gumyadi said his office had received a copy of the President's schedule. "The agenda is set for the time being. There have been no changes to the itinerary."

Gumyadi's office is in charge of protocol during the visit by the head of state. He said a 20-member group from the Coordinating Ministry for the People's Welfare would arrive in Palu ahead of the President, on April 28.

An official from the ministry's poverty eradication affairs department, Sujana Royat, confirmed the visit to Palu. "We will arrive in Palu on April 28," he told The Jakarta Post.

Parigi Moutong Regent Longky Djanggola also verified Yudhoyono would be in the regency for the harvest. "The grand harvest will take place May 2," said Longky.
